For years, travel operators are researching the best way to provide a sumptuous trekking experience to trekkers. Therefore, there are different styles of walking holidays as well as different styles of trekking routes. Among several short trekking routes of Nepal, Mardi Himal and Poon Hill Route are pretty famous. However, the Mardi trail is recently opened yet it is as popular as the Poon Hill.

Two Iconic Trekking Routes of Annapurna Region

The itinerary of Ghorepani Poon Hill with the Mardi Himal Trek route is divided into two phases. The first phase accommodates the Poon Hill Hike and the second includes the Mardi Hike. Both of these places are in the same region and in the same geographical settings. Therefore, it is an acceptable walking journey for trekkers. Though the trekking is doable, one needs to meticulously plan the number of days. In order to knit the perfect itinerary for the trekkers, Nepal High Trek presents the most scientific trekking itinerary combining both of these remarkable places. The agency also takes in suggestions from the clients too. If you would like to customize the trip, let the travel planners know and knit the itinerary itself.

Poon Hill Hike

The hike is the most trekked and preferred short walking activity to do in Nepal. With the unparalleled view of mountains and the serene experience of green lush forests in the cascading hills settings, the trail is a perfect walking route. At an altitude of 3210 m, Poon Hill offers a breathtaking view of the mountains. The morning sun kisses the tip of the mountain and lights up the whole area. The scene to behold is simply awesome. Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Himchuli, Dhampus, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, etc. mountains are seen spectacularly.

En route to the top of Poon Hill, trekkers trek through the villages of Tikhedhunga, Ulleri, and Ghorepani. In fact, Ghorepani is the last densely habituated village before Poon Hill. The majority of people in the village are involved in the tourism business as they own either a lodge or a restaurant.

How to reach Mardi Himal from Poon Hill?

Yes, people may wonder about the trail leading up to Mardi Himal from Poon Hill. However, it is well-sorted and documented nowadays. Trekkers will trek to Tadapani from Poon Hill or Ghorepani. This small town is located in a very scenic place that offers a great view of Annapurna South. The trail is mostly downhill and a few meters uphill up to the village of Tolka. The trail passes by either via the beautiful Ghandruk village or Landruk Village. The following day, trekkers meet the main Mardi Himal Trek route as they reach the Forest Camp.

Mardi Himal Hike

The trail is relatively quieter in comparison to the Poon Hill Trek route. Therefore, trekkers get an ample amount of time to relish the serene green lush forest environment. Listen to the sound of chirping birds and breathe the fresh mountain air. The overnight places at Low Camp and High Camp are on the most spectacular hilltops. In comparison to Poon Hill, the hike goes even higher. Therefore, the scenery of mountains and hills in this section is slightly more and beautiful than in the Poon Hill section. The cascading hills under the clouds and the towering mountains enthrall everyone. After visiting Upper View Point, trekkers head back on the same trail to Sidding. There is the provision of road transportation from Siding to Pokhara.

Best Season to do the Trek

The trail of Ghorepani Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek is mostly through green lush forests. The vegetation is mainly of rhododendron, juniper, firs, and birch. The spring season is the time of the year for the rhododendron to bloom. Therefore, the spring season (March, April, and May) is the best season to do the trek. However, trekkers can do the trek throughout the year. Another best time to do the trek is in the autumn season too.

People of the Annapurna Region

The Annapurna region is home to multiethnic people. There are people of different origins and castes ranging from Brahmins, Chhetris, and Dalits, to Mongolian tribes. Major people living in the area are of Mongolian ethnicity. These people are Magars and Gurungs. On this trail, trekkers get a chance to encounter and understand the culture, traditions, and values of these people. The majority of these people are involved in either farming or in an Army. The villages of these people have added a cultural dimension to this trekking.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek vs Mardi Himal Trek Experiences

The experience of trekking in both these trekking routes is heavenly. As a trekking operator, we don’t want to distinguish these two trekking routes. The Poon Hill Trek route is popular worldwide as the most serene short trekking route. Additionally, the route has well-established amenities and infrastructures for the service of trekkers. On other hand, Mardi Himal Trek is new yet serene and remarkable. If you prefer tranquility, then do the Mardi Himal Trek.

Packing list

Clothing & Ridge Layering

Because you start in sub-tropical forests (Pitambar/Kande) and end on a exposed high-alpine ridge, layering is your entire climate control system.

  • 2–3 Synthetic / Merino Base Layer Shirts: Quick-dry only. You'll sweat heavily climbing up through Forest Camp and Low Camp.

  • 1 Mid-Layer Fleece: For hiking on cooler ridge sections (Badal Danda to High Camp).

  • 1 High-Loft Down Jacket: Absolutely mandatory for High Camp evenings and the 3:30 AM ridge push to the Upper Viewpoint.

  • 1 Windproof & Waterproof Shell Jacket: Crucial above the treeline. Mardi Ridge is notoriously windy; a wind shell stops the biting breeze from leeching your body heat.

  • 2 Pairs of Hiking Pants: One lighter pair for lower forest trails, one heavier/wind-resistant pair for above Badal Danda.

  • Heavyweight Thermal Base Layers (Top & Bottom): Keep one dry set strictly for sleeping at High Camp and wearing under your pants for the summit push.

High-Camp Toiletries & Hygiene

  • Wet Wipes (2–3 Packs): Real talk: hot showers past Low Camp are either nonexistent or expensive bucket-washes in freezing bathrooms. Wet wipes are your daily bath.

  • 2 Rolls of Toilet Paper: Flatten them into Ziploc bags. Teahouses above Badal Danda do not supply TP.

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+) & Lip Balm with SPF: The high-altitude ridge sun bouncing off rocks or snow will fry your skin fast.

  • Water Purification (SteriPEN or Aquatabs): Do not drink untreated stream or tap water.

  • Basic Medical Kit: Diamox (altitude sickness prevention—consult your doctor), Ibuprofen (for ridge headaches/sore legs), Compeed blister pads, and rehydration salts.

Main Pack & Ridge Gear

  • 35L to 45L Backpack: If carrying your own gear, 40L is the sweet spot. Make sure it has a sturdy hip belt because Mardi involves continuous steep elevation gain.

  • Backpack Rain Cover: Weather on the ridge shifts fast. You can go from clear blue skies to dense, freezing mountain mist in 20 minutes.

  • Sleeping Bag (-5°C to -10°C rated): Do not skimp here. High Camp teahouses are thin-walled wooden lodges. While they give you blankets, the wind cuts right through the room. A solid -10°C bag keeps you sleeping through freezing nights.

  • Trekking Poles: Non-negotiable. The trail down from High Camp to Siding or Landruk is a endless knee-jarring descent down forest roots and loose stone steps.

  • Insulated Water Bottle / Thermos (1L) + Nalgene (1L): Freezing nights mean plain plastic bottles turn into ice blocks by morning at High Camp. An insulated bottle lets you buy hot water at night to drink or use as a bed warmer inside your sleeping bag.

Extremities (Hands, Feet & Head)

The 3:30 AM climb from High Camp (3,580m) to Mardi Viewpoint (4,200m) is freezing, pitch-black, and exposed.

  • Windproof / Insulated Gloves: Thin fleece gloves won't cut it on the ridge at dawn. Bring windproof outer gloves or ski-style gloves.

  • Warm Fleece Beanie & Neck Buff: Protects your ears and throat from the harsh, dry high-altitude wind.

  • Sturdy, Waterproof Trekking Boots: The section above High Camp has narrow ridge paths, loose shale, and occasional ice or snow depending on the season.

  • 3–4 Pairs of Merino Wool Socks: Keep one thick pair strictly for sleeping.

  • Camp Footwear (Crocs or Down Booties): To slip into at teahouses so your boots can dry out.

High-Camp Essentials & Electronics

  • Headlamp (150+ Lumens): Vital. You cannot navigate the narrow Mardi ridge before dawn without a strong, reliable light. Cold drains batteries, so keep spare batteries or the headlamp inside your sleeping bag at night.

  • Power Bank (10,000–20,000 mAh): Teahouses at High Camp rely on solar power. Outlets are scarce and cost money to use.

  • Extra Cash (Nepali Rupees): High Camp is cash-only (no ATMs, no card readers). Budget around 3,500–4,500 NPR per day for meals, hot water, charging, and Wi-Fi.

  • Trail Snacks: Snickers, nuts, or energy gels. The climb to Base Camp takes 3–4 hours of continuous steep exertion with no teahouses along the ridge.
