It has been 16 years and more in the field of Nepal Trekking for me. People come and trek with me to various parts of Nepal. However, I get lots of questions from clients. The usual question is about Annapurna Base Camp Trekking difficulty and EBC Trek difficulty. Therefore, I am writing this blog hoping to give answers properly to all aspiring trekkers across the globe.

Trekking refers to walking on the trail usually in the hilly and mountain region. The word is a synonym for hiking as well. However, people assume hiking is a short walking activity while trekking is a long walking activity. Over the years the travel trend is changing across the globe. Nowadays, people prefer to do walking to the base camp of mountains or through green lush forests. Nepal is getting lots of trekkers every year for various treks around the Himalayas. The main reason behind the increase in trekkers in Nepal is the presence of mountains. Out of 14 eight thousand meter height mountains, 8 are present in Nepal. The trekking journey to the base camp of the Annapurna mountains is very popular and ideal.

The initial phase of trekking is easy. Until trekkers reach the Machhapuchhre Base Camp it is an easy trekking trail to walk. However, the section between MBC and Annapurna Base Camp is moderate with a quite high altitude.

ABC Trek trail is the most popular trekking route in the Annapurna region. Therefore, the trail is in very fine condition. There is no risk of landslides or avalanches on the trail. However, you need to be careful while trekking in monsoon season. During this time of the year, there is a high chance of floods and landslides.

Uphill and downhill walking is common every day. The trail has many uphill and downhill walking sections. In fact, the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking route has more uphill–downhill sections than in Everest Base Camp Trek route. It is very tiring to walk uphill and downhill every day. If you consider tiredness as a difficulty meter then the trek is difficult.

 Before the ABC Trek:

  • Do light exercises every day for one month before the trek
  • Carry out cardiac activities
  • Avoid eating beer and greasy food
  • Don’t smoke
  • Gather all information regarding villages, trail conditions,s and guides
  • Buy travel insurance

During the Trek:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat soupy food (The best is Dal Bhat)
  • Keep the uniform pace
  • Heed the instructions of the guide
  • Get enough sleep

When is the best time to do ABC Trek?

Spring, autumn, summer/monsoon, and winter are major seasons in Nepal. The monsoon / Summer season comprises the months of May, June, and July. Avoid trekking in these months. However, you can trek low altitude and the Upper Mustang area during this time of the year. Winter season (November, December & January) is difficult while walking from Machhapuchhre Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp. It is fairly okay to trek in the winter season. The best time to trek in Annapurna Base Camp Trail is the months of spring (March, April & May) and autumn (August, September & October) season. During this time of the year, the weather is good and clear. Book the trek for the months of Autumn and Spring season. Additionally, these two seasons are peak tourist seasons in Nepal.

On 2nd day of the trek, trekkers reach Ghorepani Village. Early in the morning, trekkers hike for about 1 hour to reach the top of the hill. After witnessing a gorgeous sunrise, trekkers return back to the lodge and have breakfast then trek to Tadapani. It is a tiring but equally captivating experience.
