The Survey of India recorded Mount Everest as 29,029 feet (8,848.86 meters) between 1952 and 1954. Researchers and publishers widely recognized this measurement until 1999. However, Following that, attempts were made to remeasure the mountain’s height. An Italian survey conducted in 1992 utilizing the Global Positioning System (GPS) and laser measurement technology yielded a height to be (8,846meters /29,023 feet).

They concluded by subtracting 6.5 feet /(2 meters) of the measured height of ice and snow on the summit, but their methodology was quite controversial. Many surveys were conducted afterward, but the findings’ validity was highly disputed. Finally, Nepal and China declared that Everest was 29,031.69 feet/8,848.86 meters tall in December 2020. This new measurement, derived from data from surveys performed by Nepal in 2019 and China in 2020, was approved by various specialists, including the National Geographic Society.

History of Exploration

Mount Everest lies in a highly isolated location. There are no roads in the region on the Nepalese side. Even with the significant advancements in equipment, transportation, communications, and weather forecasting, the peak is challenging to reach and even more challenging to climb. Everest had repelled at least eleven crucial missions and two insane solo efforts since the British made their initial attempt in 1921.

Years later, after the discovery of the southern route,  Tenzing Norgay Sherpa from Nepal and Edmund Hillary, a mountaineer from New Zealand, became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. After their success, many veteran mountaineers started attempting to climb the peak. A recent survey shows that approximately 800 people try to climb Everest in a year.

Standard Routes of Everest Climbing

The most popular route used by climbers aiming to climb the summit of Everest is the southern one via the Khumbu Icefall. It was the route used by the 1953 British Expedition led by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary. The southeast ridge route starts from the Base Camp located on the south side of Everest at 5,364 m (17,700 ft) in Nepal. The ascent via the southern way is steeper and more direct than through the northern side.

It makes the climb more challenging. It also means that a stranded climber can reach safety much faster on the South side. Additionally, helicopter evacuations from Base Camp and Camp 1 above the Khumbu Icefall are possible. The north ridge climbing route begins in Tibet on the north side of Mount Everest. On the north side, there is no icefall. The climbers must endure the rigors of high altitude for much longer than South-side climbers.
