Six Blue Turquoise Lakes of Khumbu: Gokyo Lakes

Let’s talk about 6 Lakes of Gokyo Lake system listed in the Ramsar Conservation Site. Besides the natural importance, these lakes are also part of the cultural and religious sites of the Sherpa People. Interestingly, the lake is equally important to Hindus. Therefore, you can say these lakes represent the best religious harmony prevalent among Nepalese people. This is the first time that this blogger is writing in detail about all 6 lakes. Please note down that the 3rd Lake which is also known as Dudh Pokhari is the only place where you can find lodging facilities. In fact, there are quality resorts and tea houses on the shores of the lake.

1st Gokyo Lake (Longponga Tsho)

The 1st Gokyo Lake, also known as Longponga Tsho, is the first of the six stunning lakes in the Gokyo Valley. Situated at a high altitude, this lake welcomes trekkers with its peaceful surroundings and clear turquoise waters. Though smaller than the upper lakes, it holds a quiet charm that reflects the beauty of the Himalayan landscape. Snow-capped peaks and rocky terrain frame the lake, creating a dramatic yet calming atmosphere. As the starting point of the Gokyo lake system, it introduces visitors to the unique blend of natural beauty, spiritual significance, and high-altitude serenity found throughout the valley.

2nd Gokyo Lake (Taujung Tsho)

The 2nd Gokyo Lake, often referred to as Taujung Tsho, lies slightly above the first lake and offers an even more impressive view. Its bright blue waters contrast beautifully with the surrounding grey rocks and snow-covered mountains. The lake appears peaceful, yet the harsh alpine environment around it reminds visitors of nature’s power. Trekkers walking along its shores often pause to admire the reflection of towering peaks in the water. The second lake plays an important role in maintaining the delicate ecosystem of the region, supporting birdlife and contributing to the overall beauty that makes Gokyo Valley so remarkable.

3rd Gokyo Lake (Gokyo Cho or Dudh Pokhari)

The 3rd Gokyo Lake, known as Dudh Pokhari, is the largest and most famous of all six lakes. The village of Gokyo is located beside it, making it a central point for trekkers exploring the region. Its milky turquoise color gives it a magical appearance, especially during sunrise and sunset. Surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks, the lake creates breathtaking scenery that attracts photographers and adventurers alike. This lake is also considered sacred, adding spiritual importance to its natural beauty. The combination of settlement, scenery, and cultural value makes the third lake the heart of the Gokyo Lakes system.

4th Gokyo Lake (Thonak Tsho)

The 4th Gokyo Lake, called Thonak Tsho, lies further north and is noticeably larger and more remote. Fewer trekkers reach this lake, giving it a wild and untouched feel. The deep blue waters stretch widely across the rugged landscape, creating a powerful visual contrast against the barren surroundings. The silence here feels deeper, broken only by the sound of wind and distant glacial movement. Its location closer to glaciers adds to its dramatic atmosphere. Visiting the fourth lake requires extra effort, but the reward is a sense of solitude and raw Himalayan beauty rarely experienced elsewhere.

5th Gokyo Lake (Ngozumpo Tsho)

The 5th Gokyo Lake, known as Ngozumpa Tsho, sits near the massive Ngozumpa Glacier. This lake is famous for offering one of the best views of the surrounding peaks, including distant views of Everest. The water appears darker and more mysterious, reflecting the dramatic high-altitude terrain. Reaching this lake is a challenging journey, often involving rocky paths and glacial moraine. However, the panoramic mountain scenery makes every step worthwhile. The fifth lake is often considered a highlight for trekkers seeking adventure beyond the main trail, providing both stunning landscapes and unforgettable Himalayan vistas.

6th Gokyo Lake

The 6th Gokyo Lake is the highest and least visited of the entire system. Its remote position and difficult access make it a destination for experienced trekkers only. The lake feels untouched and pristine, surrounded by rugged terrain and icy winds. The water’s clear blue surface mirrors the vast sky, creating a powerful sense of isolation and beauty. Few footprints mark its shores, preserving its natural purity. Standing beside the sixth lake offers a rare feeling of exploration and discovery. It represents the wild spirit of the Himalayas and the ultimate reward for those who venture far beyond the usual paths.
