Why Lukla Airport is the gateway to Everest?

Before the construction of the Tenzing Hillary Airport famously known as the Lukla Airport, trekkers used to take the route of Jiri. This route is also called as the Classical Everest Base Camp Trek route. However, the route is long and costly. Every day’s increase in itinerary results in an increase in the cost of the trek. Therefore, the Lukla flight is the most important aspect of trekking in the Everest Region. EBC Trek is popular and has many trekkers due to the presence of Lukla airport. Every day more than 50 flights take place and transfer thousands of the trekkers to and from the airport. It is the starting and ending point on the Everest Base Camp Trek journey! There are many lodges and eateries as well as bars in the town. In fact, it is the town with lots of facilities like eateries, bars, banks, shops, and entertainment outlets in the Khumbu region of Nepal.

Can I use roadways to do the EBC Trek?

The alternative of the Lukla flight is a road trip to Phaplu. The construction of Hilly Postal Road has opened the chance to reach the trek starting point for EBC Trek via road trip. You can avoid Lukla flights and instead, take the road trip to Phaplu. Trekkers can extend the road trip up to Lukla Phedi after 1 to 2 years as the road is being constructed. If it happens the option to reach the trek start point will increase. Eventually, the number of trekkers to do the 12 days Everest Base Camp Trek will increase. Now, the condition of roadways is worse. Therefore, it is an ideal way to start the Everest Base Camp Trek by doing the Lukla Flights.

Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar

The first acclimatization on this trekking trip is done in Namche Bazaar periphery. The town is the Sherpa heartland and Khumbu’s sole marketplace. It has a plethora of establishments from banks to eateries and from guest houses of different categories to shops. Therefore, the place is important for the sustainability of the trekking in Everest region of Nepal. The town is located in the most picturesque place in the horseshoe shape overlooking gorgeous mountains like Thamserku, Kusum Kangaru, and Kwangde. The acclimatization activity includes hiking to Everest View Hotel. The hotel is at an altitude of 3800 m and trekkers return back to Namche Bazaar (3400 m) for overnight sleep. The process of a scientific way of acclimatization is to reach high altitude places and spend overnight at low altitude places.

Tengboche Monastery

Sherpa community’s biggest festivals are Dumji and Mani Rimdu. These two festivals are the key of Sherpa culture and these festivals are celebrated in Tengboche Monastery. The Monastery is an iconic structure of Khumbu. The location of the monastery is in very picturesque place as it has Mt. Amadablam in its backdrop adorned by the glorious view of Pangboche Valley and Lower Dudhkoshi Valley. It is truly magnificent to spend overnight in the place. Moreover, the spiritual awakening is guaranteed once you visit the monastery. In such an altitude the monastery proves the mettle of the Sherpa people and their seriousness about their culture.

Dingboche Acclimatization before reaching Everest Base Camp

For places beyond 3000 m altitude, the Namche Bazaar acclimatization break is enough. However, you need one more acclimatization break to ensure safety in the places above 4400 m. Therefore, Dingboche acclimatization is important. As a part of acclimatization, trekkers hike the Nagarshan Hill (5100 m) and spend at least an hour on the top and return back to Dingboche (4400 m) for overnight sleep. This acclimatization helps to adjust to an altitude beyond 4000 m altitude.

Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar

The ultimate destination on the EBC Trek route is the Everest Base Camp. Once you have reached Gorakshep, you will settle down and have lunch. Immediately after lunch, trekkers hike to Everest Base Camp. It takes around 1.5 hours to 2 hours to reach the base camp. The base camp during climbing season is very busy with lots of tents for the climbers. Due to global warming, the ice in the base camp is rare. Therefore, there are lots of talks regarding the change of base camp. After visiting the base camp trekkers return back to Gorakshep for overnight sleep. Early in the morning trekkers hike to Kalapathar (5545 m) for surreal sunrise experiences! It is definitely a highlight and blissful experience.
