Gosainkunda Lake: Enchanting High Altitude Lake of Nepal

The lake is an icon to both Hindus and Buddhists. There is a famous myth about the formation of the lake. In lots of Hindu scriptures like Vishnu Puran, Ramayan, Mahabharat, etc. you can find the incident of Samundra Manthan (Ocean Mining). Gods and demons tied hands to mine the elixir and good things for the universe from the ocean. While doing so the vicious poison mined and was about to destroy the entire universe. Lord Shiva came to the rescue and drank all the poison. To relieve from the burning, Lord Shiva threw his trident onto the rocks and thus formed the lake. Therefore, the lake is also called as an adobe of Lord Shiva.

During the festival of Janai Purnima, lots of devotees visit the lake and dip into its water. It is believed that dipping in the water of the lake helps you get rid of any sins. For Buddhists, they stage special dancing on the shores of the lake believing that doing this can help their deceased relatives reach to heaven. So, it is significant to both the people that prove the great religious harmony that exists in Nepal.
