Langtang to Gosainkunda Lake

Trekkers take the route of Thulo Syabru from the Lama Hotel after returning back from Kyanjin Gompa. The difficulty level on this section is high in comparison to the Langtang Valley Trek section. Most of the times, trekkers have to walk uphill. Places like Lauribina (4600 m) and Gosainkunda Lake (4380 m) are on this section. Therefore, you must be careful and heed the instructions of the trekking guide. This is the section where trekkers may get altitude sickness if not properly cared.

There are many Tamang and Lama villages on this section. You will see the prayer flags in almost every houses. The trail is densely habituated by Lama or Tamang people. These people have their own culture and language. They are the inhabitants of the region and are mostly Buddhists. Even if they are Buddhist followers, they strongly follow and perform various Hindu festivals and activities.

Myth of Gosainkunda Lake

Gosainkunda Lake (4380 m) is a holy lake of Nepal. It is sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus. Therefore, the lake is the great symbol of religious harmony prevalent in Nepal. Apart from the religious significance, the lake is situated in a beautiful landscape. It is not the only lake in the area. There are many smaller lakes in its vicinity. The formation of lake has a unique myth. According to Hindu mythology, the lake was formed by the hit of Lord Shiva’s trident. Demons and Gods did the ocean mining for elixir and things needed for the universe. While doing so, poison got mined and was about to engulf the whole universe. Therefore, Lord Shiva drank all the poison to save the world. In doing so, utter pain struck and he threw his trident onto the rocks and thus formed the water. Ever since, Lord Shiva’s hair turban is considered as the source of the Ganga River.

If you drink or dip into the water of Gosainkunda Lake, all your sins will be washed. Every year during months of August, Buddhist followers perform dance and chanting rituals at the shores of Gosainkunda Lake. It is believed that if you do so the souls of departed relatives will get peace in heaven. For Hindus, during the festival of Janai Purnima, they dip into the holy water of the lake and get rid of all their sins. There is a religious significance but the place is equally splendid in terms of landscape and nature.
