Trip overview

Tilicho Lake Trek in Nepal is a wilderness adventure walking trip up in the Himalayas. Interestingly the trek is combined with Nepal’s most famous classical detour trekking route the Annapurna Circuit Trek Route. Therefore, the trek can become the epitome of Himalayan trail excursion. The journey to the shores of the world’s highest lake is not an ordinary travel activity. It is indeed an adventurous walking holiday that you must do at least once in a lifetime if you are looking for a lifetime memory of Himalayan thrill. Nepal High Trek offers a pleasant and relaxed itinerary for the trekkers to enjoy the majestic trekking experience without much rush and hassles.

Tilicho Lake is the Highest Lake of the World

Yes, Tilicho Lake is the world’s highest freshwater ice lake. It is situated at an altitude of 4919 m. The lake is mainly icy during the winter season but during the spring and autumn seasons the lake looks awesome. Leave your footprints at the shores of the lake and rejoice being in the fairyland. The landscape looks absolutely like a fairyland where the deities reside. The mountains surrounding the lake and the Himalayan landscape make this place a picturesque place for all the trekkers.

Annapurna Circuit Tilicho Lake Trek Route Overview

The trail to Tilicho Lake and Annapurna Circuit follows the classical itinerary of the Annapurna Round Trek. Until the trekkers reach the Manang Valley, the itinerary is similar to that of Annapurna Circuit Trek. However, from Manang trekkers take the route of Sirikharka and again meet the Annapurna Circuit Trek route in Yakkharka.

The private vehicle or bus takes trekkers to Besisahar and from this town, trekkers have to take the jeep to Jagat. Walking starts from Jagat to Manang traversing through places like Dharapani, Chame, and Pisang. The trail is okay as you will have to walk on the bumpy road most of the time. The road construction has made it easy for the trekkers to walk. However, this can be boring at times and soon the road condition may get better resulting a decrease in the length of the Circuit Trek. Even if it happens like that, Nepal High Trek highly recommends trekkers to avoid traveling to higher destinations directly by bus or jeep. It may affect the trekkers and they may suffer Acute Mountain Sickness.

Acclimatization in Manang (Hike to Ice Lake or Gangapurna Lake)

Manang is slowly becoming the hottest places for the trekkers and tourists. The presence of monasteries, villages, waterfalls, rivers, apple farms, and beautiful landscapes make it an ideal retreat place for the trekkers on this tiring walking trip. During acclimatization, trekkers can choose to hike nearby hills or simply stroll around the village. Take a look into the daily lifestyle of people and help your body adjust to the high altitude places. There are many monasteries that are built in ancient times. So, soak into the local culture and enjoy the acclimatization break in Manang.

Trek to Tilicho Lake

Some of the trekking agencies have knitted a rush itinerary of 14 days Tilicho Lake Trek. They have a plan to reach the Tilicho Base Camp (4600 m) from Manang in a day. This is not practical and may become hazardous. The highest altitude that trekkers have to reach on this section is 4919 m and they need to spend overnight at an altitude of 4600 m. Therefore, Nepal High Trek proposes this itinerary. Trekkers will reach Tilicho Base Camp after spending overnight at Khagsar or Sirikharka. The walking can be easy while following this itinerary. In this itinerary trekkers get entire morning to explore the lake and return back to Annapurna Circuit Trek route via Yakkharka.

Crossing the Thorong La Pass (5416 m)

Thorong La Pass (5416 m) is the world’s most famous high mountain pass. It takes more than 7 hours to cross the Thorong La Pass. Moreover, the pass is also the world’s longest mountain pass. Travel planners of Nepal High Trek has knitted a perfect itinerary for the trekkers to complete the pass crossing with ease. After visiting the Tilicho Lake and Base Camp, trekkers will have enough acclimatization to the high altitude. Therefore, we keep our trekkers in High Camp rather than in Thorong Phedi for the easy crossing of Thorong La Pass.

Thorong Phedi is better or High Camp is better before Thorong La Pass Crossing?

It is a debatable topic whether Thorong Phedi is better or High Camp is better before Thorong La Pass Crossing. However, if you wish to make the crossing of Thorong La Pass easier; choose to stay overnight at High Camp. However, the risk of altitude sickness is low on Thorong Phedi in comparison to the High Camp. If you have already reached the Tilicho Lake then it is wise to spend overnight at High Camp.

Lower Mustang Region – Muktinath Temple & Nunnery

Upon crossing the Thorong La Pass (5416 m), trekkers enter the Lower Mustang Region. Muktinath Temple and Nunnery are the major attractions of the area including the Kaligandaki River and Jomsom. However, trekkers will spend overnight in Muktinath before driving to Pokhara. The temple of Muktinath has 108 taps and 2 ponds. It is believed that those who bathe in these taps will have their sins washed away. At the nunnery, trekkers can witness ever flaming natural light inside the temple. The landscape is beautiful as well as the cultural significance. Therefore, it is a fine place to end the trekking.

14 Days Tilicho Lake Trek Difficulty & Best Season to do the Trek

The total distance covered on this trekking route is about 160 kilometers. The trail is through uphill and downhill and reaches as high as 5416 m. Most of the trail conditions is okay to walk on as it is through bumpy off road. However, the trail to Tilicho Lake is strenuous as it is through a landslide area and on rugged terrain. You may have to walk for about 6 – 7 hours in an average. While crossing the Thorong La Pass, you may require to walk more than 8 hours. Therefore, it is considered as moderately difficult trek to do in Nepal. If you plan properly and follow the guidelines of our trekking guides, you can easily complete the trek. Prepare your body at least one month prior to the trek. Do some exercises and increase your endurance and stamina level.

The best season to do this trek is during spring and autumn season. Plan it out with our travel planners and do the hassle free trekking to the world’s highest situated lake as well as the world’s longest and the most famous high mountain pass.

Tlicho Lake with Annapurna Circuit Trek
I was extremely satisfied with Nepal High Trek! I booked my trip 6 months in advance and Nepal High Trek was very helpful in the planning of my trip. Anjan, the owner, helped me figure out what equipment I would need to bring, and they provided the rest of the supplies that I did not have. From the moment they picked me up at the airport, my time with Nepal High Trek was enjoyable and accommodating. They prepared me with an itinerary of how we would complete the Annapurna circuit and outlined all of my meals and lodging (they pick out the highest quality tea houses for you to stay in along the trail). Indako, my guide, quickly became one of my life long friends! He made the trek fun and was always looking out for my safety. We spent a lot of time hiking and sharing our cultures, experiences, and jokes with each other. Some of the most beautiful and notable parts of our trek were coming across some mountain puppies, seeing Heaven’s Gate on the trail, seeing lots of waterfalls, singing &…
