Best Clothing for the Manaslu Circuit Trek in August: Essential Rain Gear
Trekking Nepal’s Manaslu Circuit in August puts you directly in the heart of the monsoon, making high-quality, breathable rain gear a critical safety priority rather than a luxury. Your primary defense should be a premium hardshell jacket and waterproof pants made of Gore-Tex or similar breathable membranes, featuring taped seams and ventilation zippers to prevent trapping sweat during steep climbs. Underneath, stick strictly to synthetic or merino wool base layers that dry rapidly; cotton must be avoided entirely as it absorbs moisture and quickly leads to hypothermia in cooler altitudes.
For footwear and gear protection, waterproof trekking boots with deep traction are essential to handle muddy, slippery trails. Combining these with breathable gaiters and specialized anti-leech socks will protect your legs from mud and active leeches in the lower, humid forest zones. Finally, secure your belongings by packing everything in dry sacks inside your backpack, while keeping a rugged, fitted rain cover on the outside to ensure your warm layers stay bone-dry for the evening.

Altitude and Acclimatization During the August Trek
Once you enter higher elevation places, the itinerary becomes regular, like the spring and autumn Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal. The same Manaslu Base Camp hike via Birendra Lake is an ideal choice for acclimatization. Please check our Manaslu Circuit Trek package to know about regular itinerary and travel options for better understanding or planning for the trek. The highest altitude during the trek is 5106 m. Make sure that you are well acclimatized before entering the places above 3500 m altitude. Similarly, you should also follow proper safe trekking guidelines from eating soupy foods to staying hydrated.
Larke Pass Weather in August
The crossing starts early in the morning before dawn. The temperature may be around 1 degree Celsius in the morning but it may reach up to 8 degrees Celsius once you are on the top of the pass. Expect windy atmosphere with fog in the trail. Therefore, you must be vigilante about the trail and stay with the group members. Don’t wander off the trail and follow the guidelines of your trekking guide. Lots of incidents happen when you go off the trail and foggy environment may make it hard for you to join the original trail.
Accommodation and Food Availability in August
Tea houses and eateries remain open even during monsoon season. Almost all the tea houses and eateries in the region are opened by locals. During monsoon season, they may close the tea houses temporarily to work in the paddy fields. Nowadays, the number of trekkers in the trail has increased. Therefore, you can find quality tea houses and eateries in the trail even during monsoon season. Interestingly, you can easily find rooms due to fewer crowds due to off season times. The best food to enjoy during chilly monsoon season is Nepalese Dal Bhat and hot mixed noodle soup (Thukpa).
Restricted Area Permit Information
Because the upper trail borders Tibet, the Nepalese government designates the stretch between Jagat and Dharapani as a strictly protected, culturally sensitive zone that requires a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). The cost of the permit varies dynamically depending on the season and the exact number of days you spend within the restricted boundary. During the peak autumn season (September to November), the RAP costs USD 100 for the first seven days, plus USD 15 for each additional day.
During the rest of the year, which includes the winter, spring, and monsoon-summer months (December to August), the price drops to USD 75 for the first seven days, plus USD 10 per extra day. This permit cannot be obtained independently; a registered trekking agency must submit the application online on your behalf to the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu before your trek begins.
Please note that solo trekking is now possible. Solo trekker can obtain special restricted area permit but you must hire a trekking guide from the Nepal High Trek or any registered trekking company.

Transportation to Machha Khola in Monsoon
Reaching the trek's starting point at Machha Khola from Kathmandu during the monsoon season (June to August) is a challenging, highly unpredictable journey that typically takes 8 to 10 hours. While budget options like direct public buses (around USD 15 or NPR 800–1,500) and shared local jeeps (USD 20–30) depart daily from Gongabu Bus Park, they are highly prone to delays on rain-damaged roads.
Once you pass Aaarughat Bazaar, the road degrades into unpaved, extremely muddy cliffside tracks following the Budhi Gandaki River, which is highly susceptible to washouts and active landslides in wet weather. For safety and schedule reliability during the monsoon, hiring a private 4WD jeep (costing USD 150 to $250) is strongly recommended; these rugged vehicles are much better equipped to handle deep mud, and they offer the flexibility to wait out temporary road blockages or navigate alternate routes. Add at least 2 reserve days to cope with delays due to road blockage.
Fitness Tips for the Manaslu Circuit Trek
The physical fitness requirement is really needed for the trek. Being realistic, the difficulty level of the Manaslu Circuit Trek is challenging. Don’t trust the fluffy words that you find on internet. Our honest opinion is that the trail is difficult and the month of August is even more challenging. So, build up the fitness level and good cardio – vascular abilities. You may have to walk while it’s raining. Therefore, expect harsh conditions especially in the lower elevation places.
