5 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek
View detailsDoes the number of trekking days change if I use road transport on the ABC route?
Yes, drastically. Road access has changed everything out here. If we take a jeep from Pokhara all the way to Matkyu, we instantly chop off two days of walking. The same goes for the way down. Once we hike back down to Jhinu, we can jump in a vehicle and bounce our way back to Pokhara in a few hours.
How many days should I allow for weather or trail delays during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
Always build in a buffer. We suggest adding at least two spare days to your overall travel plans. Weather up in the sanctuary changes in a heartbeat. One minute you're sweating in a t-shirt. The next, a whiteout blizzard rolls through the gorge. We've been pinned down in Deurali for an entire day just waiting for heavy snow to clear off the avalanche paths ahead. If you book your international flight home for the exact day your trek ends, you're asking for a massive headache. Give yourself some breathing room in Pokhara before flying out.

Can I complete the Annapurna Base Camp Trek without taking a rest or acclimatization day?
You can. But it's risky. The max elevation at base camp is about 4,130 meters (13,550 feet). Most of our standard itineraries don't actually include a full zero-mile rest day like we do on the Everest Base Camp Trek. The altitude gain is a bit more gradual here. However, we still take the ascent from Dovan to Machhapuchhre Base Camp extremely slow. If you rush that section, you will feel awful. We've seen trekkers pushing through terrible headaches because they skipped a slower acclimatization pace. Listen to your body. If we need to stop and rest, we stop.
How many extra days should senior trekkers allow for Annapurna Base Camp?
We love taking older hikers up this trail. It is incredibly rewarding. We usually advise adding two to three extra days to the standard itinerary. This isn't a race. The stone steps leading up to Ulleri and Chhomrong are brutally steep. Taking them slow saves your joints. We stretch out the walking days so we only cover about four hours a day instead of six. It makes a huge difference. You get to actually enjoy the lush bamboo forests and waterfalls instead of just staring at your boots and gasping for air. Slow and steady wins the mountain.

9 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek
View detailsDoes trekking to Annapurna Base Camp in winter require more days than in spring or autumn?
Winter changes the whole game. Yes, you should plan for at least one or two extra days. The days are incredibly short in December and January. The sun dips behind those massive peaks early, and the temperature plummets instantly. We have to keep our daily hiking hours shorter. Plus, heavy snow can completely bury the trail above Bamboo. We've had to slow our pace to a crawl just kicking steps through deep snow up to base camp. The skies are crystal clear, but the logistics are tougher. Factor in some delay time if you brave the cold.

How many days do I need if I want to spend extra time at Annapurna Base Camp for sunrise and photography?
This is a fantastic idea. If you're hauling heavy camera gear up there, definitely add one full extra day to stay at the camp. We usually only spend one night at ABC. We wake up at 5 AM for the sunrise before hiking right back down. If we stay two nights, you get a whole day to explore the glacier rim. You can set up your tripod. Wait for the perfect light to hit Annapurna South. It's freezing up there, but having that extra 24 hours to just sit and watch the avalanches is unreal.
Can I combine the Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Poon Hill without making the itinerary too long?
This is actually our favorite way to run the route. Adding the Poon Hill section only tacks on about two extra days. It brings the total trek to around 10 to 12 days. Understand that the Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is so suitable from acclimatization point of view. You trek to Poon Hill (3210 m) and travel down to Chhomrung (2170 m) before trekking uphill to Deurali (3300 m). The principle of acclimatization becomes applicable if you include the Poon Hill section.
